Description
Picture a courtyard at golden hour, sandstone arches catching the last of the light, this saree was made for exactly that kind of afternoon. A deep indigo base is scattered with crisp white polka dots, a pattern that reads as playful up close and strikingly graphic from a distance, while the border breaks into sharp zigzag lines finished with a wide gold zari edge. The pallu carries a scattering of raw mango motifs, the paisley shape that has anchored Indian textile design for centuries, worked here in a way that feels more heirloom than trend. This is a saree built for places with history, a haveli courtyard, a family wedding in an old part of town, a function where you want your outfit to hold its own against ornate architecture rather than disappear into it. The banana silk keeps the whole drape light despite the density of the print, so a full day of standing for photographs, greeting relatives, and dancing through the evening won’t wear you down before the saree does its job. Store it well and this is the kind of piece that only gets better with age.
The Craft
The dots and zigzag border on this saree are created through traditional Bagh block printing from Madhya Pradesh, using hand-carved wooden blocks and an entirely organic, vegetable-dye process, no synthetic colour is used anywhere in the fabric. The raw mango motifs on the pallu are pressed individually, block by block, which is why the spacing between paisleys is never perfectly identical from one length to the next. Woven from banana silk, a plant-derived and biodegradable fibre, the fabric holds the zari border beautifully while staying light enough for hours of wear. Every saree ships with a complimentary cotton saree cover to help preserve it between wears.
