Product Description

Description

There is something quietly poetic about weaving diyas, the small clay lamps lit during festivals, into a saree meant to be worn under exactly that kind of light. This turquoise katan silk base carries gold diya motifs scattered in careful repeat, with a dense gold brocade border and pallu that catches candlelight and string lights in equal measure. Turquoise is an unexpected choice against traditional Banarasi gold, cooler and more contemporary than the reds and marigolds most collections lean on, which makes this piece feel current even while it uses a genuinely old technique. This is a saree for Diwali, for a friend’s wedding reception, for any evening built around light in one form or another. The open drape falls with real fluidity, and the back detailing photographs particularly well for anyone planning to be seen from behind on a dance floor at some point in the evening. Every tassel on this saree has been finished entirely by hand by our artisans, a detail we build into every Banarasi piece as standard.

The Craft

This saree is handwoven in pure katan silk by weaving families in Benaras, with the diya motifs worked directly into the fabric using gold zari thread, requiring the weaver to plan the full repeat before setting up the loom. Turquoise is a comparatively rare base colour in Banarasi weaving, and achieving this exact cool, saturated tone requires careful control during the yarn dyeing stage. The gold brocade border is woven with the same density as the motifs scattered through the body, giving the whole piece a consistent richness from end to end. Every tassel is finished entirely by hand by our artisans as a final step before the saree reaches you.
