Product Description

Description

There is a version of pink that reads as delicate rather than sweet, and this saree finds it. A dusty mauve pink base is scattered with soft white polka dots and slim leaf motifs, while the pallu opens into a denser lotus and floral panel bordered in a deeper rose tone. It photographs beautifully against old sandstone and green courtyards alike, which says something about how versatile the shade actually is. This is a saree for the softer end of festive, a haldi, a daytime mehendi, a lunch where you want to look pretty without trying visibly hard. The banana silk keeps the whole piece light through a long day of standing for photographs and greeting relatives, and the dusty tone is forgiving of the small creases that handloom fabric naturally develops. Pair it with silver jewellery for a cooler contrast or warm gold for something more traditional. Either way, this is one of those pure handloom sarees that looks even better in person than in photographs, which is rare enough to be worth mentioning.

The Craft

The polka dot and leaf motifs on this saree are created through Bagh block printing, using an organic, vegetable dye process to achieve the dusty rose and mauve tones without any synthetic colourant. Each dot and leaf is pressed by hand, one block impression at a time, which is why the repeat has a slightly irregular, clearly handmade quality. The denser floral border on the pallu required additional block work to achieve its detail. Woven from banana silk, a plant derived and biodegradable fibre, the saree arrives with a complimentary cotton saree cover to help protect the colour between wears.
